Grow Your Faith

Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 12)

Romans 10:17, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

What is faith?  Faith is defined in Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Do we all have faith?  Yes, we all have been given a measure of faith.  As it says in Romans 12:2-3, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.  For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.”

Notice that Romans 12:2 talks about renewing your mind.  How do you renew your mind?  By reading God’s Word – the Bible.  In Matthew 17:20, Jesus talks about having faith the size of a grain of mustard seed.  “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.“

Are you concerned about a lack of faith?  Don’t disqualify yourself for promises of God based on past failure, perceived lack of faith, or previous wrongdoings.  In Romans 3:21-22, we are all righteous in God’s eyes because of what Jesus did for us on the cross – if we believe it by faith.  “Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness” (Romans 4:3).  Because Abraham believed God, God credited that to him as righteousness.  Abraham wasn’t perfect.  After all, Abraham committed adultery with Hagar and had an illegitimate child by her.  But, throughout all of Abraham’s problems, Abraham never stopped trusting God.  The Bible doesn’t say that a righteous man never fails.  The Bible says in Proverbs 24:16, “A righteous man falls seven times, but he gets up again.”  It also says in Psalm 37:23-24, “The steps of a good man are ordered of the Lord….Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with the right hand of His righteousness.”

Having faith in God means that you believe that God always loves you and you are considered righteous even though you may have fallen.  You may have sinned, messed up or failed, but you are still righteous in God’s eyes and He still loves you.  The proof that you are righteous is the fact that you get back up!  Have you failed?  Feel like you’re weighed down with sin?  Get back up – get back in the game – get your heart to believe that no matter what’s happened, God still loves you.  You still have the free gift of righteousness because you’ve accepted Jesus as your Lord and savior.

God wants you to believe in His promises.  In Hebrews 11:6, it says that “without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Renew your mind daily – read God’s Word daily.  This increases your faith, and as a result, helps to get your prayers answered!  Matthew 21:21-22So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done.  And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

Here’s the key – Have faith in God and do not doubt!  Remember, whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.

SCRIPTURE MEDITATION:

James 1: 2-8 – My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.  But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Mark 11:22-24 – So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.  For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.  Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.

Romans 10:17, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Hebrews 11

Thinking, Words and Actions Go Hand in Hand

Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 11)

Psalm 19:14 (NASB) – Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.

In the verses prior to Psalm 19:14 (verses 12-13), David prays that God would cleanse him from his hidden (secret, concealed) faults, as well as from deliberate sins.  He asks that God would cleanse him, and also prays that his concealed faults and deliberate sins would not control him.  But he goes on to pray about the root of how sin creeps into our life – through the words of your mouth and the meditation of your heart.  He desires that his thoughts and words are acceptable before God.

Why is that?  Because our actions correlate with our thoughts.  What we think about is what gets into our heart.  The more you think of God’s Word and His promises, the more your faith grows.  According to Romans 10:17, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”.

How are you treating members of your family?  Your friends? Your co-workers?  What are you declaring with your words?  Do your actions reflect someone who is caring, loving or considerate?

Is there some area of your life that needs changing?  Start claiming it.  Every time you think about something that is contrary to what God has already promised you, stop the thoughts – change your thoughts.  You’ve heard the expression, “change your thoughts – change your life”.  It’s true.  The minute that bad thought comes into your head, change your thinking.  Start thanking God for something He’s done in your life. Start quoting your favorite scripture.  Remove the inappropriate or negative thought from your mind.  Refuse to fear.

By changing your thoughts, you’ll change the words you say.  In Proverbs 6:2, we are warned that we can be “snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.”  Your words are reflection of how you’re thinking.

Start thinking of what your life should look like – look past your circumstances and start believing for God’s intervention in your life. Come to God and pour out your heart to Him.  I will never forget the time that Jesus appeared to me and said, “Let’s talk about it”.  He wants to talk to you and have a relationship with you.  Remember, you’re not alone.  God said that He would never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).  Spend time with Him today!

SCRIPTURE MEDITATION:

Psalm 19:12-14 (NASB) – “How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart?  Cleanse me from these hidden faults.  Keep your servant from deliberate sins!  Don’t let them control me.  Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin.  May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”

Joshua 1:7-9 (NASB) – “Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go.  This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.  Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Call Those Things that Be Not as Though they ARE

Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 10)

Romans 4:17 (KJV) – (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

In Romans 4:17, Paul describes the faith of Abraham and provides us another example of what faith looks like.  This verse references Genesis 17:4-7 in which God spoke with Abraham and declared his covenant to him.  Abraham was 99 years old when God explained to him that He was changing his name from Abram (meaning “exalted father”) to Abraham (“father of a multitude”).

In Genesis 17:15-16, God also changed Abraham’s wife’s name from Sarai (“princess”) to Sarah (“noblewoman”).   15 Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

Keep in mind that when Abram was 75 years old, God said that He will make him a great nation, He will bless him, He will make his name great, and Abram will be a blessing (Genesis 12).   Again in Genesis 15, God promises Abram that he will have a child of his own, and compares the number of his descendents to the stars in the sky.  In Genesis 15:6 it says that “Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.”

Now it may not seem like much, but a person’s name in the Old Testament was extremely significant.  In Genesis 17, the Hebrew word “name” in this verse means “reputation, fame, glory, monument, memorial”.

Abram wanted children of his own.  God promised Abram descendents.  God changed Abram’s name, causing Abraham to say “I’m a father of a multitude” every time he said his own name, even though it was clearly evident that he did not have any children.  God caused Abraham to literally “call those things that be not as though they were” every time he said his own name.

What do you want to see happen in your life?  Your family or your friends lives? What are you declaring today?  What are you saying and confessing?  Start declaring the end from the beginning – start saying what you want to happen instead confessing your circumstances – and you’ll see changes in your life.  Start praying the solution instead of praying the problem.

Believe in your heart that God wants to bless you.  God wants to answer your prayers.  He already knows the problem – pour out your heart to Him and declare His Word.  God’ Word will not return void – find promises in the Bible that fit your situation and start declaring them over your life.  What you confess is what you possess.

God promised that we would have the same blessings as Abraham.  Abraham literally declared he was a father of a multitude every time he said his own name.  And, he had to ask his friends to say his name as well, so every time he heard his own name, he also heard God’s promise!

Find scriptures that fit your situation and start quoting God’s promises to overcome your circumstances.  Believe God’s promises as you confess them and thank God for them.  Call those things that are not as though they are right now!  Go for it!

SCRIPTURE MEDITATION:

Romans 4:17 (The Message Version):  We call Abraham “father” not because he got God’s attention by living like a saint, but because God made something out of Abraham when he was a nobody. Isn’t that what we’ve always read in Scripture, God saying to Abraham, “I set you up as father of many peoples”? Abraham was first named “father” and then became a father because he dared to trust God to do what only God could do: raise the dead to life, with a word make something out of nothing. When everything was hopeless, Abraham believed anyway, deciding to live not on the basis of what he saw he couldn’t do but on what God said he would do. And so he was made father of a multitude of peoples. God himself said to him, “You’re going to have a big family, Abraham!”

Psalm 35:27; Psalm 34:1; Psalm 40:3

Trust in God Even Through Tough Times

I’m going through some personal issues, and when I woke up this morning, I heard the Holy Spirit say, “the meek shall inherit the earth.  Look up the word meek”.  So, I went to one of my favorite bible study websites, http://www.blueletterbible.org/, to look up the definition of the word “meek” as used in the bible scripture in Matthew 5:5.  This is a great site – you put in the verse(s) you want to look up, then it will give you various options to the left-hand side of each verse.  I usually click on the little box with a “C” in it – it’s for looking up the Concordance and Hebrew & Greek Lexicon for each of the biblical words.

The site provides the Greek Word, the definition, how many times the word is used, and the other verses that include this same word.  The Greek word “meek” as used in Matthew 5:5 is used 3 times in the New Testament. [Matthew 5:5, Matthew 21:5, 1 Peter 3:4]

More importantly, the website provided a great definition of the word meek.  To give credit where credit is due, I’ve simply copied and pasted the definition exactly from this website.  It was very insightful and I thought I would share it with you.

Meekness toward God is that disposition of spirit in which we accept His dealings with us as good, and therefore without disputing or resisting. In the OT, the meek are those wholly relying on God rather than their own strength to defend against injustice. Thus, meekness toward evil people means knowing God is permitting the injuries they inflict, that He is using them to purify His elect, and that He will deliver His elect in His time (Isaiah 41:17, Luke 18:1-8). Gentleness or meekness is the opposite to self-assertiveness and self-interest. It stems from trust in God’s goodness and control over the situation. The gentle person is not occupied with self at all. This is a work of the Holy Spirit, not of the human will (Galatians 5:23).

I give all praise and honor to God!  As it says in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!”.  And, as it says in Isaiah 55:8, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways”, declares the Lord.

While we don’t understand what is happening, we should always praise God, thank Jesus, and ask the Holy Spirit to provide us with wisdom and peace in our hearts. We pray for the desired outcome and thank God that He is working on our behalf.

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

Dear Lord, You know my situation today. You know that I want to trust You. I ask for Your intervention in my situation, and to help me believe in You and Your Word while I wait. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Believe with Your Heart and Confess with Your Mouth

Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed LifeDaily Devotional (Day 9)

Here’s the story of a woman with great faith and courage to defy the laws of man, believe in the power of Jesus, proclaim that she would be healed, and to press through a crowd of people to receive her healing by touching Jesus’ garment.

Mark 5:25-34 (NKJV)

25 Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, 26 and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. 28 For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”  29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. 30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”  31 But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”  32 And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. 33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

Jesus was on his way to heal Jairus’ daughter, who was near death. While he was traveling, a woman who experienced a discharge of blood for 12 years was desperate to be healed. Why was she desperate?  First, she had experienced her blood problem for 12 years.  The emotional and physical effects were probably tremendous.  Second, she went to many physicians and “suffered many things”.  Third, she had “spent all that she had and was no better”. Fourth, she would have been considered “unclean” (Leviticus 15:19-33) during the entire 12 years, meaning that not only could no one touch her, but she could not touch anyone else, otherwise they would be considered unclean.

She believed that Jesus could heal her.  She had an obstacle – a crowd of people surrounding Jesus.  Even the disciples exclaimed that there were a multitude of people around Jesus (v31).  As a result, her deciding to press through a crowd of people to touch Jesus put her at tremendous risk – a risk she was willing to take because she knew in her heart that Jesus would heal her.

While other people who received healing asked Jesus to be healed, here’s an example of a woman who believed and said that she would be healed if only she could touch his garment.  In verse 28, it says that she “said”.  The word “said” in this verse means to speak out, to affirm, or to point out with words.  The woman said that if she could only touch Jesus’ garment, she would be made well (or whole).  This Greek word means to save a suffering one (from perishing), for example one suffering from disease, to make well, heal, or restore to health.

She was speaking from the heart.  She experienced 12 years of suffering, and when she heard about Jesus, she not only believed in her heart, she proclaimed that she would be healed by touching his garment.  Jesus said that from the mouth the heart speaks (Luke 6:45).   She believed that Jesus could heal her and said it over and over.  (Matthew 9:20; Mark 5:28)

Jesus, realizing that power had gone out from Him, asked who had touched His clothes (v 30) and looked in the crowd for her (v 32).  Then, he had her publically confess what she had done in front of the multitude of people.  She dropped down in front of Jesus with “fear and trembling”.  And, in front of everyone, Jesus’ displayed compassion and calmed her fears by called her “daughter”.  In Matthew’s account of this healing, Jesus said, “Daughter, be of good comfort”.  He reassured her that her faith had made her well.  And, the confession by the woman to Jesus in front of the crowd and the reassurance by Jesus of her healing more than likely restored her social standing as well (after 12 long years)!

She believed with her heart and said with her mouth that Jesus would heal her, and she received her healing.

Is there a situation in your life today that you need to believe with your heart and proclaim with your mouth that Jesus has taken care of it?  Find a verse in the bible in which God’s promise applies to your situation.  Jesus will honor your faith.  Jesus is approachable.  Jesus has compassion on those who come to Him.  Go to Jesus in prayer and believe that He answers prayer!

Jesus Said To Speak To Your Mountain

Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 8)

Jesus taught us about speaking to your mountain and believing what you say when you speak.

In Mark 11:22-23 (The Message Version), it says that Jesus said to the disciples, “Have faith in God. I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart.”

In Matthew 17:20 (NASB), a man came to Jesus to ask Him to heal his epileptic son after the disciples could not heal him.  The disciple asked Jesus why they could not cast out the demon that possessed the son.  Jesus answered the disciples that “because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.

In Matthew 21:21-22 and Luke 17:6, Jesus speaks again out speaking to the mountain and having faith that what you say will come to pass.  He reiterates that what you ask for in prayer, if you believe, you will receive.

When reading these verses it’s apparent that Jesus emphasized the need for faith and belief in what you say.  However, here’s another way to look at these verses.  Not only is Jesus discussing the importance of believing what you pray, but He is also saying to “speak to your mountain”.  In Luke 17:6 (NASB), Jesus uses another example and explains to His disciples, “If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you.

Jesus is telling us to speak to our obstacles in our path.  In other words, speak to your situation, your problem, your life.  Jesus instructed us to speak to our situation and it will change according to our words – especially if we believe what we say.

Our words have power.  Jesus explained that if we believe what we say, then we can move mountains.  In other words, if we believe what we say – or what we ask – it will come to pass.  In James 1:6, it says that we “must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.”

Many times we will pray for something and ask “if it be God’s will”.  God has already given us many promises in His Word.  If you want to know what God’s will is for you, check His Word first.  It is not God’s will for you to be sick, addicted, poor or without hope.  His promises are already ours – if we believe it, claim it and receive it. When you speak to your mountain, you must believe your words.  If you don’t, that means you doubt, and that is not asking or speaking in faith (James 1:6).

On the one hand, unbelief in what we pray or ask God for will hinder us from receiving our blessings.  On the other hand, belief in our negative words we say on a daily basis will also hinder us from receiving all of the fullness of God’s blessings.

If you keep saying what you see and ignoring what the Lord has already said, the result could be hindering your blessing if what you are saying does not line up with God’s promises.  Your unbelief – your fear – could be the factor hindering God’s blessings from manifesting in your life.

Instead, believe and say God’s Word.  For example, with regard to your health, you should say out loud (claim God’s promises) that you are healed.

“I believe that my body is healed, because Isaiah 53:5 says that He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.  1 Peter 2:24 also promises that I am healed because of what Jesus did on the cross for me.”

Here’s another confession: “Never again will I fear, because I am more than a conqueror through Christ who loves me.” (Romans 8:37)  Remember that life and death are not in the power of Satan – life and death are in the power of your tongue (Proverbs 18:21).  Your belief in your words – you claiming God’s Word – is essential to God being able to work in your life.

Renew your mind with God’s Word so your mind and your heart will grow strong in faith.  Increase your faith by hearing and reading God’s Word.  If your mind is confused, your mouth won’t agree with God’s Word.  When you find a promise in God’s Word that applies to your situation, remember that you don’t have to ask God’s Will for it – He’s already given it to you.  Speak to your mountain!  “I receive it and I thank God for giving it to me.  I thank you, Lord, that you have given me these promises.”

Robbed by the Thief of Unbelief

I heard Keith Moore say something referencing the “thief of unbelief”.  I believe it was a song or a teaching of Keith Moore’s.  I wrote down the words as I thought they were very insightful.  He was speaking about the lack of faith, which is unbelief.  Looking back at my notes, I thought I would share this with you!

“The reason for defeat is unbelief.  When you’re robbed by the thief of unbelief, that’s the cause of many blessings not received.

If you waiver and doubt, you will rule your blessing out, and you’re robbed by the thief of unbelief.

God gave the land of Canaan to his children and He said, lo I am with you, go on in. But when they saw those giants tall, they had no faith of all, and they were robbed by the thief of unbelief.

The disciples failed to set a young man free, even though they had authority, and when they asked the master why, to them he just replied, you were robbed by the thief of unbelief.

Peter walked upon the water, but he let those circumstances turn his head, and when he should have walked right on, he forgot the word he was standing on, and he was robbed by the thief of unbelief.

The worse thing that can happen to you is unbelief.  There is nothing too hard for God to fix.”

What Your Heart Believes About Your Words

Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 7)

Mark 11:22-25 (The Message Version)

22  Then Jesus said to the disciples, “Have faith in God.  23  I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart. 24  I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours. 25  But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.”

Our words are powerful.  Our words create life or speak death – remember that “life and death are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). There is life producing results that can occur as a result of your words.

However, what does your heart believe about what you are saying?  We can say quite a lot of idle and oftentimes foolish words, but it’s important to know what your heart believes. You can speak raise-from-the-dead words out of your mouth, as promised in Mark 11, but the kind of results you want will only happen if you believe that you receive what you pray for, and have no doubt in your heart.  Matthew 15:18 says that “But the words that come out of your mouth come from your heart.”

Mark 11:23 is a really important instruction from Jesus.  “..whosoever shall say [words] unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he says [words] shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he says [words].”  If you believe in the power of your words, they will come to pass.  If you don’t believe in the power of your words, they won’t come to pass.  That’s the only thing that keeps you falling over dead when you say, “that tickles me to death”.  You were speaking idle words but you didn’t really believe them.  If you say, “I never win anything”, you’re saying that you’re not blessed – you are cursing yourself.  You need to understand the power of words and you need to use your words to bless not only yourself, but other people as well.

When you say something like, “that person drives me crazy”.  Do you believe in your heart that you’re going crazy or are they idle words?  When you say, “my child is never going to amount to anything”, do you believe it in your heart?  When you say, “I’m afraid I’m going to lose my job”, do you believe it?

What you say out loud is what you pray.  What you say out loud is what you prophesy about yourself – especially if your heart believes what you are saying.

Most people say what they have when the bible says you can have what you say.  Speak blessings over your life.  You can use your words to fight the devil.  You can use your words to speak to your body to resist sickness and disease.  God’s Word spoken over our lives are extremely powerful, especially mixed with our faith.

You are the only one who can stop God’s blessing over you through your unbelief.  Once you understand the blessings that God has promised you, claim them, receive them, believe them in your heart, and speak them over your life.  Galatians 3:13-14, for example, Abraham’s blessings are ours.  The divine favor of God spoken over Abraham is ours to receive and speak over our life, as a result of Jesus dying on the cross.

Find scriptures that apply to your life and speak them out loud.  Start blessing people. Start saying you are blessed.  The more you read and study God’s Word, the more your heart will believe God’s promises, but your faith will grow as well.  “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17)

SCRIPTURE MEDITATION:

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV): “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Jesus Said You Will Have Whatever You Say

Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 6)

In Mark 11, we read about the story of when Jesus walked over to a fig tree that was not bearing fruit. Jesus said to the fig tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.”  The next day Jesus and His disciples walked by the same fig tree. The disciples noticed that the fig tree was dead.  Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered.”

Mark 11:22-25 provides Jesus’ response and further instruction:

“22 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.  23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.  24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. 25 And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.”

In verse 23 alone, notice that the Lord emphasized the word says four times, and ending it with we will have whatever we say.  We can either have what we say (which enables us to be able to change our circumstances) or we can say what we have (which could make us victims to our circumstances).

Words are so important!  When God created the universe, as mentioned in Genesis 1, God spoke the world into existence.  There are 11 occurrences where God spoke things into existence.  Hebrews 11:3 explains, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible”.  God created everything –including us – by His Words.

Jesus also explained that we should “speak to our mountain”.  In other words, Jesus told us to speak to our obstacles in our path.  Therefore, as God explained to me, we should speak to our situation, our problem, our life.  Jesus instructed us to speak to our situation and it will change according to our words – especially if we believe what we say.  Check our our article on “Jesus Said to Speak to Your Mountain“.

Words are powerful.  Words are keys that unlock the powers of the universe.  When the words we speak line up with God’s Word, His power is released.  When you speak words of doubt – or words that are negative – you are opening the door to cause Satan to work in your life.  You are causing the negative circumstances around you to continue, if you continue to confess and say words that are negative.  Remember that “life and death are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21).

God explained to me how important your words are and that they influence and effect your life in a powerful way.  To find out what God told me, check out the article called “Your Words Will Not Return Void“.  He explained to me how your words become seeds, and the result of those words will result in either good or bad things that happen in your life.  He also said that this is how it works whether you believe in Him or not.

Here’s another example of the importance of what you say and your faith.  In this real life example, this woman was healed based on what she said (confession of faith).  Let’s check out Mark 5:25-34 as follows:
25 Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, 26 and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. 28 For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”
29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. 30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”
31 But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’
32 And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. 33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

Here’s the point:  This woman received what she believed (said) and she received her healing the moment she took the step to demonstrate her faith (by touching his garment).  She didn’t just say that she would be healed.  She said that when she would touch His garment, she would be healed.  She was specific.  She received what she believed.  And, Jesus didn’t have to say a word or approve of the healing.  Jesus felt power go out from him after she confessed her belief and took action by touching the hem of his garment.

Either you can speak good things upon yourself or you can speak bad things upon yourself.  What words are you saying today?  What has God promised in His Word?  Start “calling those things that be not as though they are” (Romans 4:17), and then remain faithful to see how God works in your life.

The Words You Say Come from What is in Your Heart

Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 5)

Luke 6:43-45 “For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.  For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.  A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

In the original Hebrew, the word “heart” means the physical heart, but it also means:  the center and seat of our spiritual life – it’s our thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, endeavors, and our emotions, as well as our character.

How you feel in your heart will not only come out in the form of your words, but your actions will display how you really feel in your heart as well.  Thoughts and beliefs generate emotions, and emotions reside in our heart.  When you speak or react to something or someone, your reaction comes from both your mind (logic) and your heart (emotions).

Because of the finished work of Jesus, God has already given us everything we need in Jesus.  Don’t allow your heart – your opinions – to blind you to the power that has been given you through the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.  God wants you to have a life that is fulfilling.  Jeremiah 29:11 is one of my favorite scriptures, which says, “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future.”

If your heart needs help, encouragement or renewal, then grab your Bible, ask the Holy Spirit to show you some scriptures that will comfort you, and read the Word.  Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what the scriptures mean.  Hold on to those scriptures and repeat them (meditate on them) throughout the day.

Don’t limit God.  Ask God to show you what areas in your life you need to ask for forgiveness.  Spend time praying to God and telling Him how you feel.  Ask Him to comfort you.  Understand that you are righteous because of what Jesus has done for you.  When the understanding of righteousness permeates your heart, you will feel free and you open your heart to all of the possibilities of God.

Start every day by putting Jesus in the center of your life.  Believe you are qualified in Jesus, and open your heart and mind to all of the possibilities that God has promised you in His Word.  Surrender to God and speak God’s promises – speak life into your day, as well as your family, friends, finances, health and job!  Good fruit will be evident in your life as a result!

SCRIPTURE MEDITATION:  Matthew 12:33, Psalm 1:1-3, Proverbs 12:14

Write down the verses and phrases that line up with God’s Word that you will declare today that will help you persuade your heart that God’s promises are true for you today.
