Jesus Said To Speak To Your Mountain

Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 8)

Jesus taught us about speaking to your mountain and believing what you say when you speak.

In Mark 11:22-23 (The Message Version), it says that Jesus said to the disciples, “Have faith in God. I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart.”

In Matthew 17:20 (NASB), a man came to Jesus to ask Him to heal his epileptic son after the disciples could not heal him.  The disciple asked Jesus why they could not cast out the demon that possessed the son.  Jesus answered the disciples that “because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.

In Matthew 21:21-22 and Luke 17:6, Jesus speaks again out speaking to the mountain and having faith that what you say will come to pass.  He reiterates that what you ask for in prayer, if you believe, you will receive.

When reading these verses it’s apparent that Jesus emphasized the need for faith and belief in what you say.  However, here’s another way to look at these verses.  Not only is Jesus discussing the importance of believing what you pray, but He is also saying to “speak to your mountain”.  In Luke 17:6 (NASB), Jesus uses another example and explains to His disciples, “If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you.

Jesus is telling us to speak to our obstacles in our path.  In other words, speak to your situation, your problem, your life.  Jesus instructed us to speak to our situation and it will change according to our words – especially if we believe what we say.

Our words have power.  Jesus explained that if we believe what we say, then we can move mountains.  In other words, if we believe what we say – or what we ask – it will come to pass.  In James 1:6, it says that we “must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.”

Many times we will pray for something and ask “if it be God’s will”.  God has already given us many promises in His Word.  If you want to know what God’s will is for you, check His Word first.  It is not God’s will for you to be sick, addicted, poor or without hope.  His promises are already ours – if we believe it, claim it and receive it. When you speak to your mountain, you must believe your words.  If you don’t, that means you doubt, and that is not asking or speaking in faith (James 1:6).

On the one hand, unbelief in what we pray or ask God for will hinder us from receiving our blessings.  On the other hand, belief in our negative words we say on a daily basis will also hinder us from receiving all of the fullness of God’s blessings.

If you keep saying what you see and ignoring what the Lord has already said, the result could be hindering your blessing if what you are saying does not line up with God’s promises.  Your unbelief – your fear – could be the factor hindering God’s blessings from manifesting in your life.

Instead, believe and say God’s Word.  For example, with regard to your health, you should say out loud (claim God’s promises) that you are healed.

“I believe that my body is healed, because Isaiah 53:5 says that He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.  1 Peter 2:24 also promises that I am healed because of what Jesus did on the cross for me.”

Here’s another confession: “Never again will I fear, because I am more than a conqueror through Christ who loves me.” (Romans 8:37)  Remember that life and death are not in the power of Satan – life and death are in the power of your tongue (Proverbs 18:21).  Your belief in your words – you claiming God’s Word – is essential to God being able to work in your life.

Renew your mind with God’s Word so your mind and your heart will grow strong in faith.  Increase your faith by hearing and reading God’s Word.  If your mind is confused, your mouth won’t agree with God’s Word.  When you find a promise in God’s Word that applies to your situation, remember that you don’t have to ask God’s Will for it – He’s already given it to you.  Speak to your mountain!  “I receive it and I thank God for giving it to me.  I thank you, Lord, that you have given me these promises.”
