Grow Your Faith

Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 12)

Romans 10:17, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

What is faith?  Faith is defined in Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Do we all have faith?  Yes, we all have been given a measure of faith.  As it says in Romans 12:2-3, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.  For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.”

Notice that Romans 12:2 talks about renewing your mind.  How do you renew your mind?  By reading God’s Word – the Bible.  In Matthew 17:20, Jesus talks about having faith the size of a grain of mustard seed.  “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.“

Are you concerned about a lack of faith?  Don’t disqualify yourself for promises of God based on past failure, perceived lack of faith, or previous wrongdoings.  In Romans 3:21-22, we are all righteous in God’s eyes because of what Jesus did for us on the cross – if we believe it by faith.  “Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness” (Romans 4:3).  Because Abraham believed God, God credited that to him as righteousness.  Abraham wasn’t perfect.  After all, Abraham committed adultery with Hagar and had an illegitimate child by her.  But, throughout all of Abraham’s problems, Abraham never stopped trusting God.  The Bible doesn’t say that a righteous man never fails.  The Bible says in Proverbs 24:16, “A righteous man falls seven times, but he gets up again.”  It also says in Psalm 37:23-24, “The steps of a good man are ordered of the Lord….Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with the right hand of His righteousness.”

Having faith in God means that you believe that God always loves you and you are considered righteous even though you may have fallen.  You may have sinned, messed up or failed, but you are still righteous in God’s eyes and He still loves you.  The proof that you are righteous is the fact that you get back up!  Have you failed?  Feel like you’re weighed down with sin?  Get back up – get back in the game – get your heart to believe that no matter what’s happened, God still loves you.  You still have the free gift of righteousness because you’ve accepted Jesus as your Lord and savior.

God wants you to believe in His promises.  In Hebrews 11:6, it says that “without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Renew your mind daily – read God’s Word daily.  This increases your faith, and as a result, helps to get your prayers answered!  Matthew 21:21-22So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done.  And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

Here’s the key – Have faith in God and do not doubt!  Remember, whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.

SCRIPTURE MEDITATION:

James 1: 2-8 – My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.  But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Mark 11:22-24 – So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.  For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.  Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.

Romans 10:17, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
