Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 6)

In Mark 11, we read about the story of when Jesus walked over to a fig tree that was not bearing fruit. Jesus said to the fig tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.”  The next day Jesus and His disciples walked by the same fig tree. The disciples noticed that the fig tree was dead.  Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered.”

Mark 11:22-25 provides Jesus’ response and further instruction:

“22 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.  23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.  24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. 25 And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.”

In verse 23 alone, notice that the Lord emphasized the word says four times, and ending it with we will have whatever we say.  We can either have what we say (which enables us to be able to change our circumstances) or we can say what we have (which could make us victims to our circumstances).

Words are so important!  When God created the universe, as mentioned in Genesis 1, God spoke the world into existence.  There are 11 occurrences where God spoke things into existence.  Hebrews 11:3 explains, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible”.  God created everything –including us – by His Words.

Jesus also explained that we should “speak to our mountain”.  In other words, Jesus told us to speak to our obstacles in our path.  Therefore, as God explained to me, we should speak to our situation, our problem, our life.  Jesus instructed us to speak to our situation and it will change according to our words – especially if we believe what we say.  Check our our article on “Jesus Said to Speak to Your Mountain“.

Words are powerful.  Words are keys that unlock the powers of the universe.  When the words we speak line up with God’s Word, His power is released.  When you speak words of doubt – or words that are negative – you are opening the door to cause Satan to work in your life.  You are causing the negative circumstances around you to continue, if you continue to confess and say words that are negative.  Remember that “life and death are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21).

God explained to me how important your words are and that they influence and effect your life in a powerful way.  To find out what God told me, check out the article called “Your Words Will Not Return Void“.  He explained to me how your words become seeds, and the result of those words will result in either good or bad things that happen in your life.  He also said that this is how it works whether you believe in Him or not.

Here’s another example of the importance of what you say and your faith.  In this real life example, this woman was healed based on what she said (confession of faith).  Let’s check out Mark 5:25-34 as follows:
²⁵ Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, ²⁶ and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. ²⁷ When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. ²⁸ For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”
²⁹ Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. ³⁰ And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”
³¹ But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”
³² And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. ³³ But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. ³⁴ And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

Here’s the point:  This woman received what she believed (said) and she received her healing the moment she took the step to demonstrate her faith (by touching his garment).  She didn’t just say that she would be healed.  She said that when she would touch His garment, she would be healed.  She was specific.  She received what she believed.  And, Jesus didn’t have to say a word or approve of the healing.  Jesus felt power go out from him after she confessed her belief and took action by touching the hem of his garment.

Either you can speak good things upon yourself or you can speak bad things upon yourself.  What words are you saying today?  What has God promised in His Word?  Start “calling those things that be not as though they are” (Romans 4:17), and then remain faithful to see how God works in your life.

What are you saying about your life?  What are you saying about your job, your spouse, your children, your family, your friends, your co-workers, your health or your finances?  It’s time to renew your mind by committing yourself to a life that is based on God’s Word, God’s principals and the fact that God loves you.

Write down the verses and phrases that line up with God’s Word that you will declare today that will help you persuade your heart that God’s promises are true for you today.

“Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.” (Psalm 141:3)
