Would you like to hear from God today? It’s simple – read the Bible! The Bible is just like receiving a personal letter from God to you – coaching you, mentoring you, talking about how He loves you, offering insights and information on how you can live your best life, and more.
God says in Psalm 1:1-3 that we should delight in reading God’s word, the Bible, and to meditate on it day and night. Don’t be afraid to meditate on God’s Word – when you mediate, you simply mull over and think about God’s word, as well as mutter it (say it out loud). You can simply take a verse from the bible and say it over and over again. For example, as you’re driving along in your car, you can repeat a verse and as you’re speaking it, you’re also thinking about it.
As you begin to read God’s Word, don’t be surprised when the Holy Spirit begins to give you additional insight into the scriptures. The Holy Spirit will oftentimes speak to you in a very still, small voice. Remember that the insight you receive from the Holy Spirit will always – and we mean always – align itself with the rest of God’s Word! When in doubt, ask God to show you another verse that confirms what He is telling you.
What happens when we think about God’s Word? Well, Psalm 1:1-3 tells us that when we think about God’s Word day and night – we will be like trees planted along a riverbank, bearing fruit each season. What are some of the kinds of fruit we can expect to receive? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and faithfulness (Galations 5:22), and even prosperity (Psalm 1:3).
Hebrews 4:12 points out the importance of God’s Word – the Bible – “For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.”
Action Plan: Pick up your Bible, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart as you read His Word, and begin to read! And, it’s OK to talk to Him and tell him your thoughts and what is in your heart. Yes, He already knows, but it’s a start to forming a lasting relationship with the one and only God who not only created you, but the universe as well.
