Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 16)
Proverbs 21:23 (AMP), “He who guards his mouth and his tongue guards himself from troubles.”
Proverbs 21:23 (The Message), “Watch your words and hold your tongue; you’ll save yourself a lot of grief.”
Proverbs 21:23 (KJV), “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.”
The Hebrew word for “guards” means to keep, to keep watch, to have charge of, to observe, and give heed. It also means to keep (within bounds) or restrain, as well as to preserve and protect.
This word is also used in Genesis 25:5 and in Psalm 37:34.
Genesis 25:2-5:
2 Then the Lord appeared to him [Isaac] and said: “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you. 3 Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. 4 And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; 5 because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”
Psalm 37:34 (NKJV), “Psalm 37:34 (NKJV), “Wait on the Lord, and keep His way, and He shall exalt you to inherit the land”
These verses are talking about keeping the way of the Lord in your life. You can keep the way of the Lord by reading and/or listening to His Word, and listening to the Holy Spirit direct your life. You can also talk to Him anywhere and anytime. This means that there is a choice. You make the choice to spend time with Him.
Likewise, you have a choice as to what you say. Watching what you say is important. You’ll get what you confess. Make a choice to proclaim God’s word. Remember that if you are speaking negative words, even if you think it’s telling the truth, the negative comes to pass. God told me that my words (our words) are like seeds. You speak things into existence. Those seeds become trees, and those trees will bear fruit. The question is are you going to see good fruit or bad fruit?
Jesus said in Mark 11:22-24 (ESV), “And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Also see Matthew 21:21)
Here’s the key. Jesus’ explanation is not just about prayer. The prayer part is after the word “therefore”. Jesus said in the first sentence that if you say something, and you believe it, it will be done.
Here’s the key: if you say something, and you believe it, it will be done.
What do you have in your life that you don’t want – but you’ve confessed it into existence?
Here’s the question – What do you need to say and believe differently in order for your life to change for the better?
