Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 17)
Colossians 3:1-2
NKJV – “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”
NIV – “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
AMP – “Therefore if you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, sharing in His resurrection from the dead], keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above [the heavenly things], not on things that are on the earth [which have only temporal value].”
The King James Version of Colossians 3:1 starts out by saying, “Set your affection on things above, not on things in the earth.” The word “affection” in Greek means to have understanding and to be wise. It also means to “direct one’s mind to a think, to see, to strive for”.
So often the distractions of our day to day life can pull our attention away from God and His Will, which can lead to spiritual disengagement. While we attempt to handle the daily highs, lows, and even accomplishments and challenges, we can often end the day exhausted and burnt out.
We will have great accomplishments. We will have challenges. We will have highs as well as lows. We can sometimes feel numb. But during this process, what we need to be careful of is disengagement. Disengagement with family, friends, and more importantly, God and our Lord Jesus Christ. Allowing ourselves to experience this disengagement – also referred to as emotional detachment or withdrawal – is something that we are reminded to not let grow from a small seed in our thoughts and mind to a tree in our hearts and voice.
As the Lord told me, words are like seeds. You speak your words and they are like seeds – seeds that can grow into a tree that will produce fruit. Here’s the question – do you want your words to produce good fruit or bad fruit in your life?
Here’s the key: Choose to read God’s word. Choose to spend even the smallest amount of time with Him. Read His Word and listen for his voice. God can speak to you in a still small voice, a loud voice or even a thought that passes through your mind. Remember that any time you question whether it’s God’s voice or not, remember that His voice and instruction will always match up with His Word.
How do we get through life’s daily challenges? By seeking God. Even taking 10-15 minutes to quiet your soul and read His word will help you refocus your attention, and thus your mind, will and emotions.
Here’s the question: What small change in your daily life can you put into place to spend time with God and alleviate any anxiety that you’re currently experiencing? What can you do to set your thoughts, mind and heart on things above? You’ll be glad you started a habit that will change your life for the better.
It’s OK to be honest with God. He already knows, and He’s ready and willing to not only forgive you, but to help you and encourage you. He’ll even change you and mold you into the best version of yourself. All you need to do is ask and be willing to be obedient.
Our God is the best teacher, the best Father, the best provider, the best teacher and the best friend one could ever have.
