Death and Life are in the Power of the Tongue

Right Thinking, Right Words, Blessed Life – Daily Devotional (Day 2)

Proverbs 18:21 (KJV) – “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

Your tongue is powerful – what you say creates life (or good outcomes) or death (bad or undesirable outcomes).  In other words, you can manifest God’s blessings by speaking life into your situation or you can call in those things that you really don’t want to happen by speaking negatively or saying things that are opposite of God’s promises.  Speaking life simply means that you are confessing God’s promises – you are speaking out loud the outcome that you already have by the grace of God – those things you would like to see manifested in your life.

Proverbs 18:21 in the Amplified Version says, “Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.”  You have the choice of speaking life-changing words.

Life is the Hebrew word “chay”, which means “living, alive”, as well as:  (1) green (of vegetation), (2) flowing, fresh (of water), (3) lively, active (of man), or (4) reviving (of the springtime), renewal.  The same Hebrew word is used in Genesis 2:7, “Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (“chay”), and the man became a living being.”

The word “fruit” in this verse is from the Hebrew word “pĕriy”, which has three meanings – fruit (produce of the ground), fruit (offspring, children or progeny of the womb), or fruit (of actions) – also called “reward”.  Proverbs 18:21 mentions the fruit of your words.  This same Hebrew word for “fruit” is used as the word “reward” in Psalm 58:11, “Men will say, Surely there is a reward for the [uncompromisingly] righteous”.

If there are areas in your life that needs changing, your tongue is the best tool to use to bring about the transformation you desire.  Find one or two scriptures in the Bible that speak to your heart, meditate on the scriptures, and then confess the promises of God daily in order to manifest them into your life.  You are able to influence the outcome of your life with the words you speak.  Therefore, speak God’s Word – His Promises for you!

SCRIPTURE MEDITATION:

“The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” (Proverbs 18:21 – New Living Translation)

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].” (Proverbs 18:21 – Amplified Version)

“Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.”  (Proverbs 18:21 – The Message Version)

So in other words, if I say this idiom “My feet are killing me” it brings death upon myself?

    • I’m letting people know what God told me about the importance of my words and to beware of the negative words that I express. I’ve seen the results of words spoken by those I’ve met and even some of my friends. I’ve seen their words come to pass in their lives – both positive and negative. I’ve found over 100 bible verses that talk about your words. Here’s one:
      Proverbs 18:21
The Message Version: “Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.
The Living Bible Version: “Those who love to talk will suffer the consequences. Men have died for saying the wrong thing!”
Good News Translation: “What you say can preserve life or destroy it; so you must accept the consequences of your words.”
